The legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King is one of helping to make the lives of others better, and MLK Day is our chance to fulfill that goal by spending time making our environment a little nicer. Your favorite summer park is likely in need of a little care this time of year. Many parks are holding MLK Day of Service events to get you in the spirit, and you don’t need a car to volunteer your time.
We encourage you to spend time outdoors as much as possible, especially on holidays like MLK Day. We made a list of some great destinations holding MLK Day events, and have listed even more on the GoPhillyGo events page. Take time to join a clean up in a park near you, or travel to another community and help make their favorite park a little nicer.
Cobbs Creek Park
Join Cobbs Creek Community Environmental Center and GoPhillyGo for a morning of painting and building picnic tables. Groups will also help with trail maintenance and trash pickup along the trails and creek. Registration is suggested, 8am to 1pm.
Tacony Creek Park
Help cleanup this amazing urban green space in the heart of North Philadelphia. Meet at the Whitaker gateway at 10am, then stick around for lunch and hot cocoa after. Start at one of the other gateways for a pre-day of service hike or bike ride. Check out our destination page for info and directions to other gateways in Tacony Creek Park. 10am to 12pm
The Schuylkill Center For Environmental Education
Volunteer your time to the Schuylkill Center and help keep this diverse natural habitat healthy. All are welcome, and various projects will be available for all ages and skill levels. You can use SEPTA to get you to the main entrance, or take the Schuylkill River Trail to the Center’s gateway where you will find a bike rack and easy access to the Center. 10am to 12pm
Join volunteers at Bristol Marsh and help clean up trash along one of the last remaining tidal marshes in the Delaware Valley. Every piece of trash picked up is a piece that doesn’t get into the watershed. Contact Liz at email@example.com or at 215-345-7020 ext 105 to sign up. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
